We sit down with Mario Shaw, Workshop Manager at Impregnation Services Limited, to learn more about him, his role, and the business.

Thank you for taking the time to talk with us today. When did you start working at Impregnation Services Limited, and what was your role? What drew you to the role at Impregnation originally?

I started working at Impregnation in February of 2011, as a Process Line and Workshop Technician. It was definitely the company name that drew me to the position: Impregnation Services Limited: what do they do? But I was also drawn to it being a small family run business in a niche market with ambition. It was also in an ideal location, with a good size team of technicians to grow and improve my skills as well as learn something new.

What does your current role as Workshop Manager involve?

I support the Managing Director and Finance Director in running Impregnation Services in a smooth and efficient manner, whilst ensuring that customer service and focus remain paramount to the business. I assist with development and continual improvement within the business and I plan daily work schedules and allocate jobs, taking into consideration the skill set of each member of the team. As part of my role, I promote team working and motivate all staff members, encouraging them to work to their best abilities, as well as offer mentoring and developing team members. I also liaise with customers to ensure they get the very best of service, as well as manage any special projects for customers with exact requirements.

Impregnation provides an expert porosity sealing service. What do you think sets Impregnation apart from the competition?

Impregnation has over 50 years in the porosity sealing business,  and we are ambitious: ‘a problem of yours is a challenge to us’. We are able to work in house or on-site, setting us apart from our competitors. My most recent project was a job overseas in a European tap manufacturer!

We also have ongoing projects in Birmingham which is a very niche process involving porosity in ceramics. We also have the best turnaround time for customers in the UK, offering a same day service with a hands-on approach for those hard to seal castings. We add human intervention into an automated process, now that’s unique!

Impregnation has created new equipment to bolster its pressure testing service operations. Tell me more about this new development, and how it will benefit customers.

The new equipment helps the Process Technicians to be more comfortable in the role, whilst improving turnaround times on higher quantities of castings. It enables us to process more customers’ castings in an onsite, efficient, and cost effective way, without compromising on the quality, maintaining our high standards.

Lastly, what do you enjoy most about your role and working at Impregnation? I imagine no two days are exactly alike.

I don’t just enjoy it, I love it! I get to meet customers face to face with castings in hand. Can we fix this? YES WE CAN!  From that one off job, be it a pump casing from your motorbike to a crankcase from your race car, to an articulated lorry arriving with thousands of parts which need to be porosity free by the time they leave our factory, it’s a challenge but I do love it! Impregnation has a great team, good people, and good team work! Here you’re not just a number, you’re an important part of the company.
